Exhibition: Christophe Jacrot

Christophe Jacrot is probably best known for his short films. As an accomplished director, he has a profound understanding of visual narrative that transcends medium. Four years ago, Monsieur Jacrot returned to his first love: photography.

Jacrot claims his work is “romantic,” although it might not readily appear so. He claims his decision to depict lone figures battling through bad weather as an agent of awakening, in that they stimulate a feeling of “romantic fiction.”

“I see these elements as a fabulous ground for photography,” he says. “An under-used visual universe with a strong evocative power, and with a richness of subtle lights. This universe escapes most of us, since we are too occupied getting undercover. Man becomes a ghostly silhouette wandering and obeying the hazards of rain or snow.”

Upon second look, the beauty of Jacrot’s photographs becomes clear. There is indeed something romantic, or rather, literary about the lone figure, buffeted left and right by strong winds, snows, or rain. It inspires an amalgam of emotional responses, which was undeniably Jacrot’s intent. As he says, “My approach is deliberately pictorial and emotional.”

Don’t miss his exhibition from April, 18 to March, 20 at the Axelle fine art.

Start: May 17, 2012
End: May 20, 2012

American Baseball by Amelie Mancini

“Mancini’s “something exceptional” might just be the seven portraits of baseball legends Babe Ruth, Roger Maris, Jackie Robinson, Ty Cobb, Harvey Haddix, Sandy Koufax and Tom Seaver. Though the paintings feature something as admittedly everyday as baseball, they stir up a feeling of nostalgia for the America of the 1930s through 1960s, America’s Golden Age as seen by a European living in America.

Amelie Mancini’s series of paintings reflects a uniquely French perspective of baseball. Her own love for the sport came during her exploration of American culture after immigrating a few years ago. “Baseball is the essentially American sport,” said Mancini, now a Mets fan. Babe Ruth bats beneath a grotesque mask, time stops as a baseball is suspended in mid-air next to Maris’s forlorn gaze, Robinson smiles above fiery red marble, and the doors of fame are firmly shut to Harvey Haddix as he earnestly throws a pitch. Like many of Mancini’s paintings, the construction of space is defined more by color than by the traditional perspective. Serious themes mingle comfortably with the playful.

Exhibition: Françoise Pétrovitch Inklings

The FIAF Gallery is pleased to present the New York debut exhibition of Françoise Pétrovitch, a widely admired French artist. Her work is featured in the public collections of several French museums and has been exhibited internationally. Her recent, large-scale installation at the Musée de la Chasse et de la Nature generated significant acclaim and interest in her work.

In Inklings, Pétrovitch pairs her whimsical yet unsettling ink wash drawings with a video installation of over 200 designs. Ethereal and haunting, the raw animal drawings are simultaneously infused with a sense of intimacy and fragility. A sculptor with extensive experience, including at the historic Manufacture Nationale de Sèvres, Pétrovitch brings a powerful sense of substance and form to her two dimensional drawings.

Tour this engaging exhibition and explore Françoise Pétrovitch’s imaginative world.

Marc Harrold’s exhibition

Marc Harrold primarily photographs beach scenes in his native France.  The wide spaces in his large-format prints combine with the brightness of the over-exposure, and prominent and sweeping horizon line, truly evoke the feeling of being at the beach with the sun in your eyes and feeling that you can see all the way to the edge of the world.

Of his own work, Marc says, “‘I take photos of places at different times of the day, sometimes randomly, to emphasize the interaction between the light and the shade, the effect of time on the beauty of the instant. This way, probable or more unlikely encounters unveil the invisible from the visible. My photos are a reflection on the fickleness of people, of things. Signs that draw their way through light and shadow. Aestheticism is important to me to carry my thoughts and feelings.  My work is not intended to carry any specific message, but rather to share an emotion that is magnified by the experience of the observer.”
