Le chant du Styrène

Alain Resnais. 1957. Color. 14 min.
With Pierre Dux (Narrator), Sacha Vierny In French with English subtitles

Produced around the time of Hiroshima mon amour, this surprisingly deceptive short documents the creation of plastic materials at a polystyrene factory. The manner in which Resnais plays with traditional narrative (essentially telling the story backwards) is reminiscent of his most compelling experiments with structure, with the factory providing the surprisingly compelling backdrop.

Une approche d’Alain Resnais, révolutionnaire discret

Michel Leclerc, 1980. Color and B&W. 58 min.
With Alain Resnais, Rémo Forlani, Jacques Sternberg, Jorge Semprún
In French with English subtitles

Resnais embraced mystery and uncertainty in some of his greatest films, and he generally remains private about his personal life. All the more reason to appreciate this examination of his work, which includes interviews with key collaborators like Alain Robbe-Grillet and features Resnais discussing his childhood and first attempts at film.
