French Culture in New York, with a Touch of Paris

Patrick Blanc and His Vertical Gardens

The New York Botanical Garden’s annual Orchid Show is always the highlight of New York City flower shows. Among some of the most beautiful, not to mention delicate, of flowers, the carefully constructed displays of colorful orchids are not only pleasing to the eye, but also positively breathtaking.

This year’s Orchid Show will take place from March 3 to April 22, 2012, and is of special interest to French Culture Guide because it will include a showcase of French designer Patrick Blanc’s vertical orchid creations.

Monsieur Blanc is the show’s ten-year anniversary “guest designer,” a special honor for this world-renowned botanist and floral designer who will exhibit his creations in the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory. He is known specifically for his “Vertical Gardens,” which are nothing short of spectacular – floor-to-ceiling megaliths bursting with color and vibrancy. Not only is this exhibition a must-see for gardeners, flower-lovers, and orchid-enthusiasts, but aesthetes in general, because Blanc’s vertical gardens are undeniably works of art. Frequent Paris-goers may recognize his work from the exterior façade of the Quai Branly Museum.

The crown jewels of the exhibition are surely his orchid “cubes,” in which visitors enter structures contained by walls of orchids as tall as thirty-three feet, and containing original copies of Blanc’s drawings and designs. His signature “green walls,” are inspired by the famous Hanging Gardens of ancient Babylon, and each utilizes unique horticultural techniques to shape and nurture these fragile yet elegant florae.
